MEET JELLE – APPRENTICE

My name is Jelle and I am currently on board the Coral Actinia to complete my final internship.

I will graduate as a maritime officer after this period. This means that during my internship I will complete a period on deck and the technical department.

I joined the vessel at the end of February in Singapore and I was welcomed with open arms. The multicultural environment on board is very pleasant. Everyone respects each other and from the first moment there is a serious but warm atmosphere. This experience creates a professional impression and allows me to bring out the best in myself.

During my first period as deck apprentice, I was fully immersed in the work as an officer. I was explained a lot by the current deck officers and captain. During this period we also made some special trips towards Pakistan, Japan and then to Botany Bay in Australia.

Currently, I am fulfilling my role as a technical apprentice. Even in the machine room, I am included in the process between all the works. Time is nicely taken to explain things. Of course you are expected to show interest and take initiative, both technically and on deck. I have the will to learn and broaden my knowledge. Will I go technical or become a deck officer? No idea yet. That is the great thing that I can experience both sides during this period and I will ask for feedback from both positions on which I will also base my choice.

All in all, I am really in my place. The ship and crew give me room to develop myself. There is super much laughter, evenings watching a movie or playing a game. Food is absolutely great by Chef Herias!

I will continue working again, at the end of June I will finish my period of 4.5 months after which I can finally start my career as an officer or engineer.

Greetings from the Coral Actinia on the South Pacific!

I started at Anthony Veder in 2012 as an apprentice on board the Coral Methane and sailed for 5 years on several vessels within the fleet before switching to the office.

Being a Deck Officer, I felt a strong sense of responsibility, independence and freedom (especially when at the open Sea, looking at a beautiful sunrise or sunset).

The dynamic and challenging environment on board provides exciting opportunities to develop a broad set of skills. You are trained to maintain a high safety standard, on navigation and on cargo operations.

But you also develop skills on leadership, communication, teamwork, problem solving, listening to and understanding of others.

In my current role, I continue to work and connect with people from a lot of different places in the world on a daily basis. This interaction gives me a lot of positive energy and makes me love my job.

Working in the office also gives me the chance to work together with several departments within Anthony Veder. I am responsible for monitoring and contributing to the development of the seafarers in my cluster by evaluations, personal development plans and identifying training needs.

Besides that, I am involved in projects and initiatives such as sustainable employability, DEI and conferences.
